Afterthought

“How long did it take you to paint that?” It is not the sort of question that you like to get. It is typically asked by people who do not understand painting and by people whose next question is: “If it only took you that amount of time, why are you charging so much? “I regret to say that it was last asked of me by a gallery owner. The problem is that there is no real answer to the question. Sometimes a picture deserves more time than it was originally given. If you’ve been in the business for a while, you know it when it happens. There’s lots of times when I have thought a painting done, laid it aside and, later on – maybe the next day, maybe the next month or two – given it a lot more time and attention. But, there are also pictures that seem to improve over night all by themselves. This particular picture did not take too long at all. In fact, it was done as an afterthought while I was working on a larger piece. You might say that it looks it. Still, there is a freedom and spontaneity about it that I kind of like. How long did it take to paint? Not long. The larger piece took much longer but was influenced by the smaller one. So, the two works are inextricably linked as they are to every painting and drawing that I have ever done. It is all part of an ongoing monologue that takes place amidst a conversation that goes on between everyone in the picture making business.
